Latest Trends in Steel Manufacture, Applications and Related Technologies Presented by Tuskegee University

Description: Engineered steel microstructures composed of mixtures of martensite, ferrite, bainite, and/or retained austenite can be tailored to generate a range of desirable mechanical properties for steel components through the control of chemistry, thermal processing, and thermomechanical processing (TMP). The lower yield strength to ultimate strength (YS/UTS) ratio that is seen in dual phase (DP) and complex phase (CP) steels that results in a higher resistance to localized yielding and high energy absorption upon impact is such an example. In addition, dual phase and martensitic microstructures can produce high hardness abrasion resistant (AR) steels. Nucor has recently entered into a strong partnership with Tuskegee University to perform laboratory heat treatment simulations to optimize the hot mill thermo-mechanical processing; austenitization heat treatment and post quench tempering practices for some of Nucor’s products. The Nucor Education and Research Center (NERC) laboratory at Tuskegee was dedicated in March of 2010. The lab is well suited to perform small-scale heat treatment simulations of various new steel products and to characterize the hardness, impact properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of the material.

At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

A. Gain knowledge about the role of the microstructure in determining the mechanical, fracture, impact and fatigue performance of steels.

B. Gain knowledge about undergraduate research experiences in real-world industries such as steel manufacturing and how to pursue careers in metallurgy.

Take Your Career to the Next Level: Understand the Security Clearance Process

Description: Familiarizing oneself with the extensive US Security Clearance Process will enable applicants to research, acquire, and compile accurate information for a complete security package. The process for obtaining a security clearance depends in part on the agency that is providing the clearance, but since the vast majority of security clearances are obtained through the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the DoD process will be explored.

At the end of this seminar participants will be able to:

A. Identify the three levels of DoD security clearances

B. Examine the security clearance application process

C. Familiarize oneself with government utilized security clearance application documents

Topic: Advances in Biotechnology for Bio-Defense

Description: The threat of a catastrophic event caused by naturally occurring pathogens or attack by biological weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) has instigated the development of new technologies to prevent, detect and recover from effects of a biological threat. New stand-alone platform technologies requiring minimal user interface are needed. A generation of countermeasure platforms based on novel technologies in engineered biological systems is being developed. However, development of these more robust platforms requires increased understanding of the interactions between biological and chemical processes, and the interactions of these processes with human populations and the environment. Recent advances in bio-defense research will be highlighted.
